Our cats have always been very good about not scratching our furniture and instead scratch the things that we have gotten for them that they are supposed to scratch. I have made them two wooden cardboard cat scratcher holders. I made these by making a single wooden box and cutting it in half at an angle. This gave me a sloped support for the cardboard scratching piece. I did wood inlays over the knots in the wood and at the corners to strengthen them. The wood is red alder that I cut down a few years ago and the inlays are walnut. Both cats seem to enjoy the scratchers.

Fingers? Toes? No. Cats have mittens. (Dogs have mitts)

thank you so very much for the invisible cat bit, Frank! as someone who lives with cats and gets to have things tossed on the floor randomly, it was *perfect*. your love and care for your cats is one of the best things ever.

  3. @MCsCreations on February 5, 2025 at 9:39 pm

Really beautiful work, Frank! And beautiful cats! 😃

    Nice project, and nice execution.
Next time you might want to research the shape of the palm of a cat. But you are in good company – most people get the shape wrong, and it still looks nice.

I just want to commend your editing. The translucent assembly animations, the videos on the projector screen the stop motion. Everything is absolutely lovely and I’m thankful that you put that much effort into your videos!

The technical term for a cats digits are beans.

I actually do offer a carpeted version of this that can be integrated into pretty much any of my tree designs! I had a client ask for it a couple years ago and of course I was like, "Why WOULDN’T I do this?" I just wish the dollar store cardboard inserts were the same dimensions as the pet store ones (which cost more, but that cost doesn’t affect me).

  13. @startide on February 5, 2025 at 9:49 pm

You could sprinkle it with a bit of dried catnip leafs, we had that in our catscratcher and the got loved it ^^

  14. @erikziak1249 on February 5, 2025 at 9:50 pm

Lovely project. I wonder how long those carboard inserts last. I would insert a plank of soft wood, without running it through a planer, so it keeps the rough surface from cutting. I used such a plank, I think it was Spruce, on the scratcher for our cats and it did outlive two of them. Of course, the surface gets destroyed and we had always some sawdust near the scratcher. But our cats did only a little dent in the middle, where they mostly used it. Before we had some sisal rope wound around a piece of wood, but our cats managed to shred it to pieces in no time. The Spruce was a much better choice. The cats immediately got used to it.

  17. @marinahotcat13 on February 5, 2025 at 9:52 pm

Can you make a dog house???…. No a kitty condo!!!

  18. @mountainmanwoodworks on February 5, 2025 at 9:52 pm

Frank, there is one problem with the angle of this scratcher, after a few months, the two cats will start peeing on it, if you use the short side as the base and put the long side against the wall, the cats will use it more like a tree, just put a screw into the top corners so they can’t pull the pad out of the holder.

  19. @RFC-3514 on February 5, 2025 at 9:53 pm

Almost 23 minutes and not a single wood cat. Unsubscribed.

  20. @danvalleskey on February 5, 2025 at 9:55 pm

I like all your videos. I REALLY liked this one!

  21. @slaphead2965 on February 5, 2025 at 9:57 pm

Those cat scratchers are better than most of my furniture!!! 🙄
    …Great video & project btw! 👍🙂

  22. @bobd. on February 5, 2025 at 9:57 pm

I believe domestic cats (maybe all cats?) have five toes on their front paws and four on the rear paws. Did you make all of these rear paws for a reason?

  23. @ronskopitz2360 on February 5, 2025 at 9:59 pm

Cats walk on all four paws, so they have only feet, so they have only toes. That’s my view…

  24. @danielstellmon5330 on February 5, 2025 at 9:59 pm

I’m not sure which is more impressive, your wood working or your video editing.

  25. @comsigninc on February 5, 2025 at 10:02 pm

Another spellbinding production and no catastrophic accidents. 🙂

  26. @rickcimino743 on February 5, 2025 at 10:02 pm

your videos are works of art….just as much as your projects are.

  27. @MoYvStarkey on February 5, 2025 at 10:03 pm

Cat toes are called, toe beans. Cause they look like little beans.

  28. @jdhannan on February 5, 2025 at 10:03 pm

I don’t understand the bandsaw fence with the piece jutting out!

  30. @ManBearPig1968 on February 5, 2025 at 10:04 pm

A bit of cat trivia/info. My significantly better half is Brazilian born and raised. One day I was making a comment about cats having 9 lives, she looked at me in complete disbelief and said, you’re messing with me right??? Because cats only have 7 lives in Brazil. Not American cats, they have 9. All she said was, why does that not surprise me? 👍💯😂😂😂😂😂

  31. @danielmarion8426 on February 5, 2025 at 10:05 pm

They don’t have toes or fingers. They have beans

  32. @ragnkja on February 5, 2025 at 10:06 pm

Four digits implies that it’s a back paw, doesn’t it? In which case they’re definitely toes.

  33. @bolloids on February 5, 2025 at 10:07 pm

первое, что приходит на ум при просматривании этого ролика, парень -транжира и мот!!! но до чего же приятно смотреть за его работой! был бы знаком с дочерьми Главного, наверное тоже бы так смог!))) а может быть и лучше!!!)

  34. @chrisvos2721 on February 5, 2025 at 10:09 pm

Put some cat nip on the boards for their pleasure and your pleasure for watching them have fun.

  35. @chrispratt3047 on February 5, 2025 at 10:10 pm

Love this. Been looking for ideas on making something similar for our cats. Also, it’s my understanding that cats don’t have fingers or toes. I believe they’re called squish beans 😉

  36. @karlschuneman7960 on February 5, 2025 at 10:10 pm

Rub Cat Nip onto the cardboard

  37. @Barbaralee1205 on February 5, 2025 at 10:11 pm

You can count on cats to mis, dis and un-use anything you make for them! 😳. I have made perches, beds, cat doors, bought expensive hand made wool caves only to have them ignore them completely. They sleep on my bed, the floor, outside… sit at the glass door and wait to be let in instead of using the perfectly good cat door. Go figure 😢

  38. @eivindgrimsgard on February 5, 2025 at 10:11 pm

The details and perfection in the editing deserves so much credit. I love the effort you put into your videoes

  39. @wdwrxco on February 5, 2025 at 10:12 pm

cat fingers are called toe beans

  40. @DanKoning777 on February 5, 2025 at 10:16 pm

They turned out *"purrrfect"* Frank! Well done.

  41. @WoodUCreate on February 5, 2025 at 10:16 pm

I love it Frank. Such great content.

  44. @BruceAUlrich on February 5, 2025 at 10:18 pm

You classed those up a lot. Enjoyed the video, Frank!

  45. @Mike__B on February 5, 2025 at 10:24 pm

So it all makes sense, I can see master woodworker Frank Howarth slowly descending into "That crazy cat person"

  46. @ZOEng99 on February 5, 2025 at 10:24 pm

How did the cats thank you? ‘Where’s my food?’

  47. @strat0caster63 on February 5, 2025 at 10:25 pm

“Next up on Frank Makes: kitty litter box furniture!”

  48. @wafflebeaver on February 5, 2025 at 10:27 pm

I’m a terrible cat dad… my cat is watching this with me and giving me a sassy face.

  49. @bloodgain on February 5, 2025 at 10:32 pm

The internet has declared that cats have neither fingers nor toes. They have beans.

  50. @cscape1973 on February 5, 2025 at 10:33 pm

I think the approved term is “toe beans” rather than fingers
