I love her
I am a very lazy man, I prefer the sponge filter, it’s quite very easy to maintain 😊
Thanks so much. Your video is so helpful. Such great information, and easy to really understand. Great video . Grateful.
…thinking HOB … but love the first ones you showed inside your tank
Do you actually like the ziss filter? Seems like no one does.
I understand that you are young but it’s kind of a shame you don’t know about or remember under gravel filters. I feel they lost popularity for two reasons; firstly, over the years there has been an increase in interest in planted aquariums and they aren’t really so great for that application. Secondly, and I think more importantly, they just don’t cost enough money to support the industry. Who in the retail LFS/ aquarium business wants to sell a highly efficient dirt cheap simple filtration system that never fails and never needs replacing? 🙂
cannot beet a built in filter where you add a sponge and ceramics and plastics balls pluss a decent size pump
Really disappointed there’s no mention of under gravel filters. One of the most basic filters that so many people got started in the hobby with. Otherwise, great video for beginners.
You didn’t include the O.G. The GOAT, the under gravel filter. If you install a bulk head in the bottom you can flush it out if your worried about thing under there. Or use a shop vac on the uplift tubes once a year or so if your worried about it. I don’t, and have no problems. Or if you turbo charge it buy adding a pump to the uplift tubes instead of using air. You can just flip one over on one side and suck everything out. You would need two uplift tubes for this and the shop vac method. I add window screen or crochet sheets to keep things from getting in the plenum area if I’m using small substrate. One under gravel filter I filled with lava rock and used crochet sheets to hold them in for transport. Four years later, still going strong. In a planted tank even. I don’t even gravel vac that one since it has a carpet.
I like the hangonback filter or Hamburg matten filters, the main problem with the hangonback is you have problems with factory fitted lids as they need to be modified to make them fit.
I’m trying to find a good back up filter for my tank I have a CFS700 that is 750GPH (canister filter with built in UV sterilizer) and I’m looking for recommendations for an additional filter to add mainly for the loose poop on the sand, any suggestions?
hi baby
I’m a relatively new fish keeper and I just took my filter out and added a ton more plants any advice?
I also noticed that water was dispersed over the back of the unit too, as you raised and lowered the filter media basket. Surely making the unit taller would help with this problem.
Irene, that was the BEST comparison of filters I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much. (I actually bought a Marineland canister filter for half price. And I have been afraid to try it. lol. But I am going to be brave soon. I bought a 75 gallon tank and am setting up a goldfish tank. Now I need to choose a 2nd filter to keep the water crystal clear.)
Great video
Redundant
10:55 try sunsun 602 or 603 , cheap chinese canister filter about $20 400 litre/hour , but real test about 190-200 lt/hour
Plants are great but be sure to test the water regularly, especially early on.
great info TQ
Ive got a mechanical filter at the moment. I would love a hang back one but due ti the lid of my aquarium I cant and my lights are built into the lid. I may look into a sponge filter though for whenever this one breaks as they will last much longer.
I run both except 1 tank but I still have a n air stone. One disadvantage to sponge filter is the bubbles make a MESS of the glass lids..yuck
How often should you clean a sponge filter?
So does the sponge act as a filter for mechanical and biological?
Which one is the quietest? I’m really annoyed by the air pump.
The internal filter is my favourite beacuse it is easy to make one at home for cheap.
How often you suggest to change mechanical filtration?
I have bought your sponge filters However mine don’t have the groves in them . What is the difference if any ?
Fake news
Just a small correction. Plants will do chemical filtration, it just depends on the species. Some can even remove heavy metals from the water.
What plant could I put inside my fish aquarium with gravel substrate and will have no issues growing ?
Exelent video
BOX FILTERS… BOX FILTERS…. those are the best because you can add in your media of choice.. it clears the water best.
Yeah, I’m done with canister filters. You’re more likely to change out your media when it’s easily accessible, not when you have to disconnect hoses, shut everything off, blah, blah… I had a leak on a canister filter that would not seal even with a new gasket because there was a chip in the plastic casing, so I threw it out and never looked back with easy-to-maintain HOB filters…
how to i keep my floating plants from getting pushed down and then getting caught in the filter?
Edit: so i went to check on my fish this morning and one was sucked into part of the filter, she’s still alive but no fins.. and then i lost 2 of my shrimp that got stuck. i am going to change to something else
Me watching the video with a internal filter in a corner and a hang on back filter in the middle and a sponge filter in another corner of my 30 gallon planted tank
*What’s your favorite kind of filter?* Also, if you’ve ever wanted to try making your own filter, here’s our DIY bucket filter tutorial: https://youtu.be/4BZ6zyQIf60
9:50 any decent HOB has an overflow route. Aquaclear is trash, weak even when power goes out
Why does irene have such a manly voice ?
But isn’t that extra nitrogen good for your plants? I imagine you mean at super high levels?
may i know the exact hangon filter u used?
How do your plants grow so well with bubbles? Mine became very stunted.
I use a canister filter with a wide coarse sponge on the intake tube. This way you don’t have to clean out the canister filter as often, or ever, depending on your intake filter choice and cleaning regimes.
Loved this video , very informative , BUT , I still don’t know which way to go. My wife and I have had multiple aquariums for years , we are about to downsize , I think. We have 7 aquariums , 2 75’s , 1-55 , 1-36 , 1-30 , 1-26 and 1-20. They are all saltwater. We are getting rid of the 75s and instead mixing them into a 125gl which we have had before. We have always used HOB filters. I hate those things myself. What I would like to know is which would be better……. sponge filters for the 125 or canister filter ? I know it may be a preference kind of thing but I would like some input.
Thanks to anyone who comments.
God Bless !!!
Jesus Is The Way , The Truth and The Life !!!
what size is the sponge on the medium sponge filter?
Awsome explanation! With the plants at the end, I thought I wonder if they all need a substrate. 2 seconds later you answered it very well, thank you kindly.
Great video.
But there’s an “old school” filter that is always forgotten. The under gravel filter. I’ve run these for decades and swear by them. Lately I also pair it with a sponge filter.
This combo works amazing.
I thought this was girl talks fish before she sid "I’m Irene from Aquarium Co-Op"
How many sponge filters can you use in a 10gal tank? I’m already using an Aquaclear as well.
❤Hi Irene! I love your Content. You’re the first channel I followed when I started fish keeping- so I guess you can say – you’ve taught me everything I know.. which I’m sorry to say, in 9 months isn’t very much 😅 but WAY more than if I didn’t find you. My fish thank you! ❤
I’m setting up a 55 gallon planted ( dirt and sand) tank for my female guppies (because there’s a million now😊-) I am trying to figure out what kind of filter to use- they are messy fish so I am worried that sponge filters won’t do it. I honestly don’t see much junk in my sponge filters as my HOB. So I’m worried I’m doing something wrong.
am also thinking sponge filters innmy betta tank over my fx6🤔
