Puzzle Toys for Cats: Everything You Need to Know!
Puzzle Toys for Cats: Everything You Need to Know!
Does your cat use puzzle toys? They SHOULD! You might think of puzzle toys as entertainment, but thatโs where youโre wrong – theyโre necessary enrichment to keep your cat engaged and behaviorally healthy. Hunting, foraging, and eating are the major building blocks of the Raw Cat and I truly believe that every cat can benefit from the use of puzzle toys.ย

I have three cats and they all have different food drives. My youngest, though, I sometimes wonder if he even knows what food is. Last night, I gave them all some new treats and he waited until the other two finished to even start eating his. Then I had to fight the other two off for five minutes for him because if I didn’t, he would just walk away and let them have his treats. I’m afraid that if I went to a forage only method of feeding them, he wouldn’t get enough food because he either wouldn’t find it before the other two or wouldn’t figure out how to get the food. He’s a little bit of a dummy and with him not being food motivated, he hasn’t cared to learn how to do the puzzles I’ve gotten them. I already worry about how much he eats. Even the vet couldn’t stop saying how tiny he is last time I took him. It wasn’t in a "I’m worried about him" kind of way, more of a "I haven’t seen a full grown cat this small in awhile" kind of way. I had to say "I promise I feed him, he just doesn’t eat." Most days at feeding time, he sustains himself with just the knowledge that there’s food in the bowl, and maybe take a couple bites at best. ๐ญ
We adopted an 8 year old male cat last year with medical issues. Heโd been diagnosed at some point with eosinophilic granuloma complex, I noticed some pretty significant anxiety issues, and then we started noticing he had issues with his teeth. He had a few removed shortly after we brought him home, and then a few months ago was diagnosed with stomatitis. We opted for a full mouth extraction. Dealing with the medical side definitely helped with his anxiety, but heโs not interested in any of the traditional cat toys. And he deals with the lack of stimulation by being a jerk to the other cats. Heโs incredibly food motivated thoughโฆand working puzzle toys into his routine tamps down some of his attitude.
Should the use of a puzzle toy, with food, take the place of a "meal"?
Our cat doesnโt eat dry food, is there a cat puzzle toy for wet food? Thanks.
I love
My cat princess
I had
My other one
Ollie for 11 yrs
He passed and
I got
Princess
She a good girl
These toys sound great and I think they would be good for my cat however I also have a dog, yellow lab, who will eat anything she can get her mouth on. How do I use a food puzzle for my cat?
A box with shredded paper with some crunchies in it and an egg carton with crunchies in the cups are things my cats love.
My baby Loki absolutely loves puzzles! We got him a harder one this year for Christmas and he has already mastered it ahahaha! Going tp have to invest in some harder ones
I am curious about one thing, in a video about cat essentials you said that food/water bowls shouldn’t be made fron plastic because it’s porous, but all licking mats/slow feeders I saw are made from plastic, so what can we do to make them safe for our pets? Should we boil them after use or wipe them with alcohol? Thanks for anyone who has some input into this matter ๐บ
jackson, how would you recommend transitioning an easily stressed cat from free feeding to meals? my mom has a cat who stops eating when stressed, to the point where we have to take him to the vet for subq fluids and anti-nausea meds, and no problems show up on an ultrasoundโฆ itโs getting expensive. i worry that to stop free-feeding would stress him out enough to not eat at all. but he definitely needs more mental stimulation during the day, especially when iโm away at school and my mom is working.
My cats get their food in plastic bottles with holes cut in the side and a glass jar they can pull food out of.
My little dude LOVES puzzles. He knows that meeting for mom is puzzle time for him. And he likes them so much we are having trouble finding difficulty levels that he can’t memorize ๐
What if I have multiple cats? Do I need a puzzle for each one? Or can they share?
Yep i dont have to buy stuff
This will work great for my boy cat but my girl wonโt eat anything but her cat food out of her bowl โฆ if she drops it on the floor she wonโt eat it she acts like itโs poop and tries to cover it up
I lost
My cat
Ollie last yr and now
I have a 2yr old female
She i as very good
Don’t jump on counters
She sleeps in my bed at the foot
I put together a cat tree tonight & my cats havenโt got down from that thing ๐
Great video, but I have 5 cats in a very small home. How do I keep them from fighting over a puzzle toy? Do I have to get 5 toys?
My problem is that my cat is to smart and figured out them to fast. We still use them to get him to have to forage for food but we have to get him the dog ones because the cat ones are to easy. He also gets board easy and demands food and walks when he just had them.
Getting my cat lick mats tomorrow! Looking forward to how they do with them
So how often should I do it? Should I do it right before meal time or in between or after meal time? How often should I do it in a week or should I do that daily?
What do you think about feeder balls? We have one enormous sedentary guy. We are going to attempt to feed him this way.
Thank you so much for sharing this information. I went and got some maze looking puzzle bowls from the "dog" section. And they are helping my cats to slow down when they eat. Less scarf and barf!
Most of the puzzle toys for cats that cats use to put their food or treats in are made of plastic. But plastic is bad for cats; you have said in other videos not to use plastic bowls. What are safe materials to use for puzzle food/treat games for cats?
So don’t grieve get another cat
And spoil it
Wow! Gross.
I was grieving didn’t sleep in

My cats have the glowing ball in a tunnel maze. They compete to control the toy. As for treats… my cats won’t eat them. None. Nope. Nada. Don’t even want dinner human food. Nope. We have auto feeder. 1/4 cup in 6am and again 6pm.๐
I’m buying in january a 3yo female who had two litters, but was finally neutered because she hadn’t enough maternal instinct.
She never did puzzles and is used to have food available all the day long. All the cats living at that breeder’s home are quite thin, but her… she’s fat. Mayve not obese, but clearly overweight.
Do you think:
– She can learn to do puzzles?
– I can start them day 1 (with the food she’s used to)?
– I can replace from day 1 all her meals with the puzzles, in order to gelp her to eat less, but still not feeling too hungry thanks to the distraction?
Hi Jackson or community! What if my kitten (~8months) is underweight? I’ve been free feeding her because that’s the only way I seem to be able to get her to gain weight. Even if I schedule feed she leaves so much (of the recommended kitten amount) that it essentially ends up being free feeding.
She wasn’t " baptized against her will."
She made the choice.
Coercion my *ss.
She wanted out of a ticket/jail, she chose to accept an offer. (Regardless of how ‘whatever adjectives’ said offer was)
The above is akin to All the people whining and crying that they were Forced to take the jibber jabber 3yrs ago because various entities "mandated" it.
They choose to take that bs Experimental Gene Therapy jab (not a va x).
Albeit they were given a crappy choice to make, go find a new job or be a guinea pig for big Parma & part of the worlds biggest clinical trial but regardless they chose to take it. No law forced it upon them, just MSM & Gov playing word games and fear mongering.
This country (people of) have become way too lawsuit happy over nothings!
Are there any sanitary issues or considerations to make for DIY puzzles that are not cleanable? I’m thinking like cardboard, wodd, etc.
Hello! I also greatly advise the intellicat, developed with an amazing canadian cat behaviourist Lโรฉduchateur.
Whatโs great is that it can adapt to each cat and can be really easy or really complicated, and a lots of things in between. I advise you to watch vidรฉos about it.
We have thbig containers so she has
Her food and water e

Where do you get these puzzles Ive been looking forever to find different puzzle ties but they are all the same
Love that no matter what I want to know about cats, cat daddy has a video about it! I want more ways to enrich and stimulate my cat, and this video is perfect to know more on what I should look for!
I want to play with my cat but she’s old and just won’t chase it even if she’s interested in it ๐ I’ve seen some of your videos and I don’t think I’m doing anything different in terms of how I’m moving it, but she’s just not having it ๐ญ
she needs to lose weight but it feels like I’m between a rock and a hard place with getting her to lose weight to make sure she lives longer ๐
My cat is a scarf-n-barf even with a slow feeder ๐ฌ (got her checked by a vet, he confirmed that she’s not sick she just scarfs). I think I should get her a trickier puzzle
my cat will always take temptations . .aka kitty crack
Just got a 6 month old kitty. Can not wait to watch all of your videos to learn how to keep her happy. Thank you so much for sharing how to have a happy cat!!!
So
My son took
Me to 10 lives
And
I git
Princess
What if my cat is too smart Jackson? She learns the puzzles in under 30 seconds- weโve even graduated to the dog puzzles and sheโs mastered them all, even the highest complexity ones. Is there a way to hack the highly complex ones so that I can reuse them in a new way? I love them so much for her since my baby absolutely adores them and cries when I take them away because she loves the challenge. How do I reuse them/ get them to be hard enough so she needs to work to figure it out? Is there somewhere to look for even More complex ones?
My cat is not food motivated but I add different foods into separate puzzle feeders across my little flat. She enjoys going from one to another to pass the time. I also keep one or two hidden away and then cycle them around.
okay, this guy is hilarious! I’m hooked! Love your channel man! Looking forward to more ๐
Jackson, they are all made in China. Can you please make one made in USA? I donโt buy anything made in China and especially for my kitty. ๐
Play With Your Cat!!!
I feel like I must be the only person who owns a cat who is absolutely not food motivated. Don’t get me wrong, she eats enough to maintain her weight, but she’s just… not into it. She is not free fed (mostly because I have another kitten who would eat the adult cats food when she shouldn’t lol). It took me about 9 months to even find a treat she would actually eat. And she has zero desire to work for the food. And yes she’s been thoroughly checked out at the vets, blood tests etc. – she’s perfectly healthy. Just not food motivated.
